Trump Reveals Pick For Attorney General, Praises AAG Todd Blanche

President Donald Trump said he believes acting Attorney General Todd Blanche will become his permanent pick to lead the U.S. Department of Justice.

Trump made the remark during an interview broadcast Wednesday on Pod Force One, signaling that Blanche, a loyal ally who has been serving in the role on an acting basis, may soon officially become the nation’s top law enforcement officer.

Asked whether Blanche would be U.S. attorney general, Trump said: “I think he will.”

“He’s a very talented guy,” Trump said.

Trump also said Blanche was “doing a very good job” at the Justice Department.

Blanche was appointed acting attorney general in April after Trump fired Pam Bondi. Since then, the Justice Department under his leadership has taken several high-profile and controversial steps.

Those actions include the unveiling of criminal charges against former FBI Director James Comey, an escalation in the department’s investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan and the removal of press releases related to prosecutions of rioters who attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Blanche also played a central role in the administration’s push to create a $1.8 billion fund meant to compensate Trump’s allies.

The secretive proposal sparked fierce backlash in Washington, including from Senate Republicans, before Blanche abruptly announced Tuesday that the fund had been scrapped.

The plan had drawn legal challenges and political outrage from critics who argued it amounted to a taxpayer-funded slush fund. Republicans also raised concerns that people who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6 could end up receiving payouts.

Even with the fund dropped, Blanche told a House Appropriations Committee hearing that the federal government is keeping an agreement barring the Internal Revenue Service from auditing Trump, his family and related entities.

Trump defended the proposed fund during his podcast appearance, arguing that his supporters had been unfairly targeted and deserved to be paid back.

“These are people that have been decimated,” said Trump. “There’s never been anything like this, what happened to those people, and these were many great people. And I gave them pardons. I’m very proud to have given them pardons, and I think they should be (reimbursed) for a crooked government.”

The comments show Donald Trump is standing firmly behind Blanche despite the firestorm over the proposed fund and the Justice Department’s aggressive moves under his watch.

For Trump, Todd Blanche is not just another legal official. He is a trusted operator at the center of a Justice Department that has moved quickly to revisit cases, challenge old power centers and pursue the president’s agenda.

Now, Trump appears ready to make that arrangement permanent.
