Former Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing new scrutiny after a CNN report said multiple women accused him of sending sexually explicit messages, including “videos of him m*****bating,” on Snapchat.
The report landed less than a month after Swalwell resigned from Congress following allegations of rape and sexual assault by multiple women. CNN said it spoke with “more than a dozen” women who described encounters over the past decade that left them uncomfortable, both in person and online.
Several women told CNN that Swalwell used Snapchat after becoming “one of the first lawmakers to join Snapchat,” a move that once earned him the label “the Snapchat king of Congress,” according to the network.
In 2016, Swalwell promoted his use of the platform as a way to connect with the public.
“We can restore a lot of faith that people have in their democracy by opening it up a little bit more,” Swalwell told The Hill in 2016 after joining the messaging service. “Snapchat is a great way to do that.”
But CNN reported that some women said the account quickly shifted from politics to personal and sexual messages.
One young woman told CNN that Swalwell sent messages about her future before asking, “What are you wearing?”
Two other women said Swalwell sent them “sexually explicit messages and unsolicited nude photos and videos of himself” in 2021. A third woman told CNN she received “sexually tinged messages and videos.”
CNN also reported that a former congressional staffer said she developed a consensual sexual relationship with Swalwell after he began flirting with her on Snapchat in 2021.
During that relationship, the woman alleged Swalwell sent “nude photos of himself and videos of him m***bating,” which showed the congressman’s “face and naked body.” CNN said the videos were saved by the woman and shown to the network.
“His stories would be his, like, congressional content, but then he would be sending me d**k pics,” she alleged. She also claimed Swalwell sent another “explicit video” late last year, weeks before he announced his 2026 California gubernatorial campaign.
In another instance described in the report, Swalwell allegedly wrote a letter of recommendation for a woman he had never met after sending flirty Snapchat messages about her “sexy pajamas,” CNN reported.
Another woman, Clara Miklaucic, told CNN she was 19 and working as a restaurant hostess when Swalwell approached her in 2021. She said he later found her on LinkedIn, sent flirty messages, offered to write a letter of recommendation, and told her her name was “beautiful” after speaking with her for less than 15 minutes while dining at the restaurant.
“I remember being surprised getting a message from him since I didn’t give him any information, other than probably my first name,” she told CNN. “He was literally over double my age.”
Another woman told CNN she had to remind Eric Swalwell he was “married with three kids” after he added her on Snapchat and “suggested that they hang out.”
CNN reported that after it contacted Swalwell’s lawyer for comment, the former congressman allegedly confronted several women in the early hours of the morning for taking screenshots of his messages.
