‘LIFE SUPPORT’: Trump Gives Update On Iran Ceasefire

President Donald Trump said Monday the U.S. ceasefire with Iran is “on life support” after Tehran sent what he called an “unacceptable” counterproposal to Washington’s plan to end the war.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the month-old truce is “unbelievably weak” after he reviewed Iran’s response.

“I would call it the weakest, right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us,  I didn’t even finish reading it,” Trump said.

“I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says, ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1% chance of living,’” he said.

The ceasefire began April 8 after weeks of escalating tension tied to the war and the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for global oil shipments. Trump had threatened to destroy Iran’s “whole civilization” if no deal was struck. The truce was initially expected to last two weeks, but Trump later extended it on April 21.

The agreement has been shaky from the start, with both sides accusing the other of violations as attacks continued in the region.

When Trump announced the truce April 7, he said the deal was conditioned on Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz. After shipping traffic failed to return to pre-war levels, Trump ordered a U.S. naval blockade in the Gulf of Oman aimed at stopping ships from entering or exiting Iranian ports.

The ceasefire has not stopped all hostilities. In the past week, Iran attacked the United Arab Emirates, the U.S. and Iran traded fire in the strait, and the Pentagon said it struck two Iran-flagged oil tankers.

Donald Trump and senior U.S. officials said last week the ceasefire remained intact while Washington awaited Iran’s response to a proposed framework to end the war and set up further talks over Tehran’s nuclear program.
