JUST IN: Trump Announces Breakthrough In Russia-Ukraine War

President Donald Trump announced a short-term ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, saying the sides will pause fighting for three days as negotiations continue.

In a Truth Social post Friday, Trump said the ceasefire will run from May 9 through May 11, timed to mark the end of World War II for Russia. He said the pause will include a suspension “of all kinetic activity” and a prisoner swap involving 1,000 prisoners from each country.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump wrote, adding that there was constant progress in talks to end the conflict.

Trump had said after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 29 that a temporary ceasefire was in the works. Putin announced a similar three-day truce last year that was not agreed with Kyiv.

Russia has separately announced a ceasefire for May 8 to May 9 to coincide with commemorations of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II and a military parade in Moscow’s Red Square.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has floated its own plan for an open-ended ceasefire, calling for it to begin at midnight Tuesday and urging Russia to reciprocate.

U.S.-brokered talks have slowed in recent months amid disputes over eastern Ukraine. The negotiations have been hung up on the Donetsk region, where Moscow wants Ukraine to withdraw from parts of the area Russia has not captured in its full-scale invasion. Ukraine has said it will not give up territory it still controls.

Officials said Thursday that Ukraine’s top negotiator, Rustem Umerov, arrived in Miami for meetings with U.S. representatives as the peace track remains stalled.

Both Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of violating earlier ceasefires that were declared separately.
