Alina Fernandez, the exiled daughter of late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, was pressed on live TV this week about a long-running internet rumor that former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau could be her half brother, and she didn’t exactly slam the door on it.
Fernandez appeared Tuesday night on NewsNation’s Katie Pavlich Tonight to discuss Cuba’s humanitarian crisis, U.S. sanctions and President Donald Trump’s threats of potential military action against the island once negotiations with Iran wrap up. But as the segment wound down, host Katie Pavlich pivoted to the conspiracy theory that refuses to die.
“For years we’ve heard rumors that Justin Trudeau, the former prime minister of Canada , could be your half brother. What do you think about it?” Pavlich asked.
Fernandez smiled and offered a response that kept the speculation humming.

“Uh… the only thing I can say is that his mother used to visit the country very often…”

“The only thing I can say is that his mother used to visit the country very often,” Fernandez said.
“Well that may be a tell then,” Pavlich replied. “I guess that’s a half answer.”
“Yes,” Fernandez said.
Pavlich then asked whether Fernandez planned to contact Trudeau to settle it.
“Do you plan to call him and maybe find out?” she asked.
“No, no,” Fernandez said. “If he wants he’s welcome but I won’t, I won’t. I think he keeps that to himself and you have to respect that.”

The claim has floated around for years online and was mentioned by Donald Trump in his 2024 Save America book, with believers alleging Fidel Castro is Trudeau’s real father rather than Pierre Trudeau. One key fact cited against the rumor: records show Pierre and Margaret Trudeau’s first official trip to Cuba came in 1976 — five years after Justin Trudeau was born in 1971.
