Elon Musk Announces Formation of the “America Party” After Break With Trump

Elon Musk has launched a new political entity called the America Party, marking a sharp departure from his longtime alliance with President Donald Trump and both major U.S. parties.

Musk unveiled the party on X (formerly Twitter) following his public rejection of the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill,” a massive tax-and-spending package signed by Trump.

“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” Musk declared, citing an X poll of more than 1.2 million users that showed 65.4% support for a third-party alternative.

He went on: “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one‑party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”

Musk, a former Trump administration adviser who led the short-lived Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), had endorsed Trump’s 2024 campaign and later grew disillusioned with the new spending measure.

He condemned the bill for worsening national debt by over $3 trillion and pledged to support congressional challengers to lawmakers who backed it.

The America Party is being positioned as a fiscally conservative force aimed at disrupting the two-party system by targeting a handful of key congressional seats. Musk suggested a strategy focusing on “2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” hoping to wield legislative power through closely contested races.

Political analysts caution that building a viable third party in the U.S. is exceptionally difficult due to structural barriers like ballot access, winner-take-all elections, and entrenched party allegiance—but Musk’s significant personal resources and media profile give the initiative a unique boost.

Treasury markets responded to the announcement with volatility, reflecting investor uncertainty about Musk’s shifting focus from his companies and political projects.

Meanwhile, Trump has threatened to withdraw federal subsidies from Musk’s corporations and hinted at possible deportation, escalating tensions into a full-scale feud.

Despite the tumult, Musk stated that the America Party will not seek the presidency immediately but will debut in the 2026 midterm elections, asserting the goal of capturing a narrow but pivotal role in Congress.
