Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic Socialist front-runner for mayor of New York City, identified himself as both “Asian” and “Black or African American” on his 2009 Columbia University application, The New York Times has reported.

According to leaked internal admissions data obtained by the Times, Mamdani, then a high school senior, checked both racial categories and also added “Ugandan” in a free‑response field.

Mamdani explained that at the time, college applications did not include an option that fully captured his unique identity — born in Uganda to Indian parents, immigrated to the United States at age seven, and raised in New York.

“Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian‑Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background,” he told the newspaper.

Mamdani now describes himself as “an American who was born in Africa” and has stated that he does not identify as Black or African American, adding that checking these boxes was not intended to gain an admissions advantage but to accurately reflect his heritage.

He emphasized that he clarified his nationality in the “Ugandan” write-in section and regards the decision as one of honesty amid limited options.

The revelation has sparked debate. Critics allege the dual identification may have been a strategic attempt to benefit from race-conscious admissions policies at elite universities.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams, also a candidate in the upcoming general election, has demanded that Columbia release Mamdani’s full application records, calling the situation “an insult to every student who got into college the right way.” Adams characterized the move as misleading and offensive.

In a campaign video interview on NPR, Mamdani emphasized his identification as a “South Asian elected official” and a “Muslim elected official,” grounding his public identity in those communities.

[This post contains video, click to play]

Mamdani’s candidacy, as a 33-year-old immigrant and progressive, has energized diverse voter groups, including South Asian and Muslim New Yorkers, especially after clinching the Democratic mayoral nomination earlier this month.

But this controversy introduces a new dimension to his profile, raising questions about identity, representation, and political optics.

As the general election approaches, this story is likely to intensify discussion around race, authenticity, and how political figures present themselves. For now, Mamdani maintains that he acted transparently given the constraints and complexities of his background.

Bill Pulte, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Housing Council, is calling on Congress to launch a formal investigation into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell over what he described as the deliberate maintenance of artificially high interest rates intended to undermine President Donald J. Trump’s economic agenda.

In a statement posted to social media, Pulte accused Powell of keeping rates elevated beyond what current market conditions warrant, despite declining inflation and widespread economic strain on American homeowners. “It’s time for Congress to investigate Jerome Powell,” Pulte wrote. “He’s causing enormous harm to millions of homeowners and buyers by refusing to adjust interest rates in line with economic reality—all to spite President Trump.”

Mortgage rates have remained near 7 percent, even as core inflation has dropped below 2.5 percent in recent months. The high borrowing costs have significantly slowed home sales and put pressure on first-time buyers, prompting growing criticism from within conservative economic circles. Pulte argues that the Federal Reserve’s inaction is politically motivated and no longer justifiable based on data.

While Powell has not responded directly to Pulte’s allegations, Federal Reserve officials have consistently stated that rate policy decisions are driven by long-term stability goals and not political considerations. In previous public comments, Powell emphasized the need to avoid premature cuts that could reignite inflation.

Chairman Pulte, a vocal supporter of Trump’s housing and economic initiatives, has become increasingly outspoken since his appointment earlier this year. He argues that monetary policy should be responsive to current market needs, not held hostage by what he called “bureaucratic stubbornness.”

The call for a congressional investigation has gained attention from several members of the House Freedom Caucus, with some lawmakers indicating they would support a formal inquiry if rate cuts are not considered at the Fed’s next policy meeting.

As housing affordability remains one of the top issues for American families, the political pressure on Powell and the Fed is expected to intensify, especially with President Trump’s administration seeking to revive homeownership through targeted incentives and lower borrowing costs.

California Governor Gavin Newsom is pushing back hard against the Trump administration’s reported plan to rescind national monument status from two recently designated protected areas: the Chuckwalla and Sattitla Highlands National Monuments.

The two sites, both located in California and protected by former President Joe Biden, could have their designations reversed under new legal interpretations by the Trump Justice Department. Chuckwalla, in particular, borders the existing Joshua Tree National Monument and is considered a key part of California’s conservation push.

Reacting to the news, Governor Newsom called the move unnecessary and politically motivated.

“This is just getting petty. Grow up,” he said in a press statement.

In a separate post on X (formerly Twitter), his office added:

“If it’s a day ending in Y, it’s another day of Trump’s war on California.”

The Trump administration is citing a newly issued legal opinion stating that the Antiquities Act of 1906 does not prevent a president from undoing national monument declarations made by previous administrations. The memo effectively overturns a 1938 interpretation by former Attorney General Homer Cummings, which argued the opposite.

According to reporting from the Washington Post, the Justice Department believes that past monument designations can be reconsidered — especially if the land in question no longer meets the criteria for protection or was never eligible to begin with. The administration argues that keeping vast tracts of land off-limits hinders future development and economic potential.

Critics, including environmental groups and California officials, argue that the move threatens critical ecosystems and undermines decades of preservation work.

Newsom also took aim at Donald Trump Jr. following an interview he gave with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, in which former ICE chief Tom Homan floated the idea of arresting the governor for undermining federal immigration enforcement.

Newsom mocked the conversation, writing:

“Promo code ARREST for 15% off your Trump Phone.”

He also accused President Trump of using inflammatory rhetoric to stir unrest in Democratic-led states, claiming the administration is attempting to “militarize our cities.”

When House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) told Newsom to focus on “lawlessness” in major California cities, the governor responded by pointing out that Missouri’s homicide rate is over 117% higher than California’s, according to crime data.

White House spokesperson Harrison Fields fired back, defending President Trump’s energy and land-use policies.

“Freeing up federal lands in an effort to secure American energy dominance is not petty,” Fields said. “We wouldn’t expect Gavin to understand adult decisions that help his state, considering his legacy of failure.”

Fields also criticized California’s green energy initiatives, calling them a “Green New Scam” that has caused price hikes, energy shortages, and benefits for political donors over regular citizens.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has called for increased military cooperation between the United States and Israel, suggesting that it is time to take a more forceful approach toward Iran.

Speaking during an interview on Fox News’ Hannity, Graham said, “It’s time to move into the land of force” and advocated for “closing the chapter on the Iranian Ayatollah.”

He warned of what he described as a growing threat from Iran, stating, “They want to kill all the Jews in Israel and come after us. That’s what their whole country is built upon.”

Graham further called on the U.S. to provide direct military assistance to Israel if necessary. “If we need to provide bombs to Israel, provide bombs. If we need to fly planes with Israel, do joint operations,” he said.

The comments come amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and ongoing international concern over Iran’s nuclear program and its support for regional militant groups. Graham has long taken a strong stance on U.S.-Israel relations and Iran’s role in the region.
