BREAKING: Trump-Backed Challenger Unseats Rep. Thomas Massie In Closely-Watched Race

Republican candidate Ed Gallrein has defeated longtime Rep. Thomas Massie in the heated, razor-close primary contest in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. The race was notable as Massie had repeatedly voted against President Donald Trump’s leading agenda items, which prompted the president to endorse his opponent.

Decision Desk HQ called the race in favor of Gallrein at 7:43 p.m. Eastern Time on Tuesday night. The race was called as roughly half of the votes had been counted, with Gallrein maintaining a roughly 10-point edge throughout much of the evening.

Massie had been underperforming in the Election Day voting areas he needed after Gallrein secured an early voting lead, election analysts noted throughout the night.

Gallrein is a retired Navy SEAL captain who served for 30 years, including deployments with SEAL Team Six. A fifth-generation dairy farmer from Shelby County, he and his family operate a destination farm and Circle G Stables in Shelbyville.

He launched his campaign in October 2025 and received President Trump’s endorsement shortly thereafter, which became a central element of his bid.

Massie, who has represented the district since 2012, has a history of independent positions within the Republican Party. He has frequently clashed with President Trump on legislative matters, with disagreements stretching back to the president’s first term in office.

Despite the disagreements between the two, both Republicans endorsed each other ahead of the 2024 election season. Tensions boiled over once Trump was sworn in for his second term, however, as Massie opposed the president on several agenda items, which he claimed were due to budget concerns.

A notable example was Massie’s vote against the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” a major legislative package associated with Trump that included tax cuts, border security provisions, and other priorities. Massie was one of only two Republicans to vote against it, citing concerns over deficits and overall spending levels.

Massie also suggested that President Trump was tied to notorious sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes despite the lack of any evidence and referred to the Trump Administration as the “Epstein administration.” Bizarrely, the congressman ran ads highlighting his areas of agreement with the president — whom he spent weeks claiming was covering up a child sex-trafficking ring — during the final weeks of his campaign.

The primary contest drew national attention due to its intensity and scale. Outside groups, including pro-Israel organizations and Trump-aligned super PACs, invested heavily in advertising and support for Gallrein.

Total spending in the race exceeded $32 million, making it the most expensive U.S. House primary in history according to tracking data.

Gallrein positioned himself as a consistent conservative who would support the president’s agenda on manufacturing, agriculture, energy, and border security. His military service and farming roots also served as central points of his campaign in the district, which spans a number of northern Kentucky counties.

The race was widely seen as a referendum on the power of President Trump’s endorsement. Massie, who had built a cult following due to his his libertarian-leaning views and occasional breaks with Republican leadership, as well as emphasis on issues like gun rights, government transparency and opposition to certain foreign interventions. Despite these advantages and his long tenure, the combination of Trump’s direct involvement and record spending shifted the dynamics in favor of the challenger.
