NEW: Embattled Democrat Mayor Abruptly Steps Down Just Months After Reelection

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced Thursday that she will step aside and resign effective June 30, ending a run that began when she was first elected in 2017.

Lyles, Charlotte’s first Black female mayor, said she will not seek another term. She framed the decision as personal, saying she wants more time with family and to clear the way for new leadership.

“Serving as Charlotte’s mayor has been the honor of my life,” Lyles said. “Now, it is time for the next phase of my life, to spend more time with my grandchildren and for someone new to lead us forward.”

Lyles has spent more than three decades in Charlotte city government. Before becoming mayor, she served two terms on City Council and was mayor pro tem from 2015 to 2017. Her earlier city roles included budget analyst, budget director and assistant city manager.

As mayor, Lyles pointed to economic growth and job creation, public safety efforts, housing initiatives and expanded public transit as marquee priorities. Voters last year approved a sales tax designed to support transit infrastructure and service upgrades.

Her departure sets up a scramble at City Hall ahead of the June 30 exit date as the city prepares for a leadership transition.
